A while ago, LarryB brought this picture to our attention.

One feature did get additional attention from Tim and I...Browns sleeves stripes.

Below you will see what we currently show on this site vs what this 1948 AAFC game photo shows.

Our question to the GUD community...
How far forward from the AAFC days did the Browns continue with this sleeve stripe pattern in terms of the thickness of the stripes #1,#3, & #5 as well as stripes #2 & #4?

1946 (White Jersey)--Looks like the brown stripe is thicker than the database version:

1947 (White Jersey)--Looks like the stripes are even throughout, matching the database:

1949 (Brown Jersey)--Looks like the orange stripe is thinner than the database version:

BD,
Thanks for the AAFC photos. Any chance we can get some from the 50s to see if this trend continued with the stripes or if it was just during the AAFC days?

Looking at these it looks like stripes #2 & #4 on the sleeves were still thinner than the other 3 stripes at least through 1954. I would assume this would hold true for the brown jerseys also, yes?

BD/Bill,

If I can weigh in here...

After looking through a bunch of 195- thru 1967 (brown jersey) and 1968 (white jersey) pics on getty and uspresswire, I am reaching this conclusion:

1) Brown jersey. No question to me:
a) Sleeve stripes in general should be a little larger.
b) Orange stripes are definitely smaller in this whole era. This applies to both sleeve and sock (1950-1969) stripes.

2) White jersey. This one is a little tougher because both sets of stripes (brown and orange) are darkish and seem to blend together more. But, this is how I see it:
a) Sleeve stripes should be a little larger.
b) Orange stripes I believe are smaller in this era. I would apply this to both sleeve and sock (1946-1969) stripes.

BD, please give me your take on this.

Bill, could you please shoot me some mock-ups via email?

Thanks, guys!

I did some dry runs on the AAFC Browns - which can easily be applied to as much of Cleveland as we need. I think the brown jerseys are dead on. The whites I think are also dead on because I achieved the exact same effect you speak of with the orange and brown blending together. If you magnify a brown sleeve next to a white sleeve you will see the stripes of both jerseys are the exact same size. At normal magnification, however, they do not quite look the same as those on the brown sleeves.

What do you think?

I am yet to deal with the socks. That can be done after we settle the sleeve business. I don't want to change the socks only to have to fix them again later.
