A question in the 12/3/61 Cleveland Plain Dealer asked about the cost of the average football uniform, specifically asking the difference between the pros and high school. Here are the given costs for the Browns (and presumably the other pro teams); the only cheaper part for high schools was the pants:

TOTAL $150
Shoulder pads & Cleats--Roughly around $85 combined
Helmet $24
Pants $23 (HS was $9)
Jersey $16
Socks $3.50

In 2011 dollars, the $150 would be about $1,100.
