1989 Atlanta Falcons -- Week 16

Post  Market42 on Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:06 am

Here's something from the final game of the 1989 Atlanta Falcons season. During that Christmas Eve game against Detroit (famously drew 7792 fans; a case both of the cold weather and how lousy the Falcons of the late 1980s were); several players wore a #83 and #73 on their jerseys.

The numbers were in tribute to two players who died within a month of each other in car accidents; offensive tackle Ralph Norwood (killed on November 24) and tight end Brad Beckman just five days earlier.

As far back as the 12/3 game vs San Francisco they wore #73:

So...

11/26 - Week 12 at NYJ - "73" on red jersey

12/3 - Week 13 vs SF - "73" on white jersey

12/10 - Week 14 @ MINN - ??? on white jersey

12/17 - Week 15 vs WASH - ??? on white jersey

12/24 - Week 16 vs DET - "83" and "73" on white jersey

Theoretically, the "83" should have been added by the 12/10 game in Minnesota. If we can find a photo showing that, it would then be safe to count on the 12/17 game having both as well.

Having trouble though, understanding the order of...demises. If the lineman (presumably #73) dies on 11/24 and then the tight end (presumably #83) followed 5 days earlier, why was the 73 added first?

***UPDATE*** http://www.nytimes.com/1989/12/19/sports/sports-news-briefs-car-crash-kills-falcon-tight-end.html

Beckman, the TE, was killed in a car crash on DECEMBER 18. His number would ONLY have been featured on the 12/24 game.

Both 12/10 and 12/17 featured ONLY the "73" on their jerseys.
