The 1981 Oilers wore a different striping pattern on their blue socks (for just this single season).

In 1982 they returned to their familiar pattern.

Here's some various Oilers pics from the era:

From 1978:

From 1981:
1981 Houton Oilers. Oilers1981
1981 Houton Oilers. Oilers8sep1981

From 1982:

1981 Houton Oilers. Oilers28nov1982qx

Now the SF and LA games were definitely both from 1981 (the #00 says by Getty it was from '81 also, but unconfirmed)

Yep, the columbia blue socks on the 1981 Oilers is a confirmed change.

The Oilers only wore CB for the first two games of the season at Anaheim and Cleveland and wore white for the rest of the season, home and away.

The Ken Burrough pic I highly doubt is from 1981, as it looks like the Astrodome in the background, and the Oilers wore white at home for all of 1981.

bigbluelarry, u da man!!

THANKS! Smile

That's a 1981 pre-season game at Texas Stadium.

Isn't that Archie Manning #8 in the background? He was still in New Orleans in 1981.

In 1981 they had former Gator and future Bandit QB John Reaves wearing #8 on their roster...and apparently it was his chance of a lifetime:

I guess he didn't wow anybody, because he failed to unseat 36-year old Ken Stabler and started two games and fell to 3rd QB behind Gifford Nielsen by the end of the year.

Plus, they had red facemasks in '81

ok, so forgetting the Burroughs pic (which I guess is from an earlier year)... if the #8 in the pic is Reaves and it is the 1981 preseason game (8/29/81) does that mean they didn't have the "white-middle" socks until the regular season, or is it possible that it is from 1982 (they also played 1982 preseason at Dallas) and that #8 is Archie Manning, and that they did have the different socks for the whole 1981 season.

Slats is right, this pic is definitely from 1981. (so the #8 is Reaves)

HOU #62 John Schumaker, HOU #34 Earl Campbell, DAL #54 Randy White all played for their teams in both 1981 and 1982, however blocking RB #26 Rob Carpenter played for Houston in 1981, but finished the '81 season with the NY Giants.

The Oilers had no #26 in 1982, according to pro-football-reference (unless it doesn't include expanded rosters of preseason).

so they only had these socks for the '81 regular season, and not the preseason

Plus, if it was 1982, Randy White would have "54" stitched on the hips of his pants.

Rob,

So to sum up, do we:
1) ADD the regular season red/CB/white/CB/red sock combo to the two we have for 1981 and KEEP the other CB combo with a "Preseason Only" tag?
-or-
2) REPLACE the current CB combo with the red/CB/white/CB/red combo?

I'm thinking it's #1, but I want to make sure.

I LOVE the detective work, guys!! Smile Smile

Tim

I think as long as we all agree that the preseason game is 1981, and the Rams and Browns games does have the new socks, then yes, #1, add a combo with the new socks and keep the old ones and say "preseason only"
