Too good not to share...
What's so special about this picture, you may ask?
While doing some digging on 1960 AFL NOBs I came across this picture on USPresswire of an August Preseason Game with the NY Titans @ LA Chargers. The caption even included the name of the referee #53...Ben Dreith.
If that name sounds familiar, it should...

...if it doesn't, then someone needs to "give you the business!"
I think the overlooked part of this whole episode is that Ben calls the penalty on #99 (Gastineau) when really it was Marty Lyons (#93) giving Jim Kelly the business!

I love the old AFL ref uni, with the orange number and heavy black outline. I don't think I've ever seen the white one like that. Nice.

Re: Too good not to share...
Anybody think anything in this picture warrants a database adjustment or preseason only addition?
Maybe the "one" on the Titans #13 TV number has no base? Also if you look closely right in front of #76 on the Chargers, you can see a Chargers #26 helmet, I think the number looks a little smaller than what we have on the helmet. I'd like to compare it with other 1960 Chargers helmets and see the size of the number.

On the subject of AFL officials jerseys...
I think in 1961, the refs took off the back number and put them on one sleeve (a la MLB umpires). In 1965, they changed the stripe colors to red and white from orange and white. They revived the back munbers with black block numbers inside a white rectangle. The head ref wore a black cap while his assistants wore red caps. In 1968, the AFL unis went out the door and they adopted NFL officials gear.

Re: Too good not to share...
I'm amazed at the size of the number on the back--especially since the average fan is not going to look in his program to see exactly who made the call.

The referee looks more like a baseball player with the stirrups.

1960 AFL Ball
Im sorry if this is off topic and not related to jerseys but i am hoping someone can help me.
I recently purchased an AFL football that was suppose to be from 1960. In fact its suppose to be from the first exhibition game of the 1960 season.
The football has a white stripe and there has been some debate if the 1960 footballs had that white stripe (i know they did later). Im hoping if someone can point me in the direction of some original wire photos or something from the 1960 ONLY season. Getty images, etc hasnt turned up much help
Thank You and sorry for the trouble
