Ran across a slideshow with some interesting pictures of the Oilers and Jets in the middle of a Monday Morning Quarterback article on the NFL and artificial turf; but wasn't 100% certain whether this was an "oddity".

The article contains pictures from a camera set up by Neil Leifer (then of Sports Illustrated) at the top of the Astrodome prior to the October 20, 1968 Jets-Oilers game; and in that slideshow I noticed three things:

  1. None of the Jet helmets shown had the logo decal on it (all the Houston ones I saw did).
  2. Some, but not all, of the Jet uniforms had the player last names there.
  3. None of the Oiler uniforms had last names shown.

More likely the article simply messed up the date.
The Jets played a preseason game at Houston on 8/12/68.
This was the first Oiler game of any sort in the brand new Astrodome and would have merited the presence of Mr Leifer.
The year before (1967) was their last year playing at Rice Stadium.
Makes further sense that they show the unrolling of the astroturf in the 1st photo of the article.
Lack of helmet decals and lack of NOBs was pretty common in the AFL back then for the preseason.
