2022 GSL Expansion
I'd like to use this thread to keep tabs on expansion for the 2022 season.
As of this morning we have two new franchises accepted into the league with a primary team application
Birmingham Owls
Boston Bobcats
And, we have a new owner for the St. Louis Brewers
5 expansion teams remain, and both the Los Angeles Express and Louisiana Royals are still open to new owners for 2022

The newest team to be added to the league is the New York CityHawks.
I'm putting basic team info up for now while I can, but, since I plan to be busy pretty much the entire weekend starting tomorrow, I don't know how much work I'll be able to do adding new teams to the site until Tuesday next week.

Thanks for the help offers, but I'm not sure what y'all can do. Adding teams to the league is me running database queries by hand, and editing the php files, so that's kind of a me thing.
I may have some time to pop into my office this weekend and try to do some updates, but I won't have the default team images up until next week, but I'm fine with that.

Actually... I know my way around the GUD template pretty well, so if you want, I could assist in converting uniforms to the GUD template and make sure everything's accounted for.Austin Snelick wrote:92Mafia wrote:Austin Snelick wrote:The newest team to be added to the league is the New York CityHawks.

Yeah, if you'd like.
So far, I don't have any uniforms that are finalized that are ready to be put on the GUD template, but I'll let you know if I get any this weekend.

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
Okay, I've come up with a helpful task, to who ever is interested.
I've got everything for the New York CityHawks at this point, so if anyone wants to write a news story reviewing the new team, I can get that up on the site Tuesday.
I can email all the necessary images, and in return a google doc with pictures in the right places will do. Only picture requirement is that the title news picture must be 650x400 pixels (you can work with a higher resolution before that, but in the end size it down to 650x400, which is what I do).
If anyone is interested, let me know.

From the offseason schedule thread:
December 1, 2021: Any current GSL owner will be able to apply for ownership of a second team, if any expansion teams are still available
January 1, 2022: If there are still un-owned teams, current GSL owners may own any number of teams until there are 32 owned teams in the GSL

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
The latest team to be approved for a GSL expansion franchise is the Chicago Maroons.
This leaves room for 3 more expansion teams for 2022.
Dallas will get a team
The following cities are available for the other two teams remaining after Dallas is claimed, with no restrictions: Kansas City, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Vancouver
Although, the league will strongly consider a bid for Vancouver over other competing bids
Also, the Los Angeles Express and Louisiana Royals are both currently available for ownership.

Two expansion franchises remain available at this point, as Dallas had been claimed (actually, Dallas was claimed September 1st, but the emails didn't forward correctly to me normal gmail account).
I've also decided that one of the two remaining expansion franchises be located in Vancouver. I've been debating on doing this for a while, really, since the beginning of expansion, since I think it would be good for the league to have a second Canadian team, and one on the opposite end of the country.
So, that will leave on franchise to Vancouver, and another to either Minneapolis, Kansas City, or Oklahoma City.

How do these most recent changes effect division alignment?
Here are the divisions, based on all three remaining expansion scenarios:
Eastern Conference
North
1. Pennsylvania
2. Toronto
3. Wisconsin
4. Either Chicago or Minneapolis
East
1. Baltimore
2. Boston
3. New York
4. Washington
Atlantic
1. Atlanta
2. Carolina
3. Jacksonville
4. Miami
Central
1. Birmingham
2. Cincinnati
3. Louisiana
4. Louisville
Western Conference
Pacific
1. Oakland
2. Portland
3. Seattle
4. Vancouver (Expansion)
West
1. Las Vegas
2. Los Angeles
3. Salt Lake
4. San Diego
South
1. Albuquerque
2. Arizona
3. Dallas
4. San Antonio
Heartland
1. Colorado
2. Memphis
3. St. Louis
4. Either Chicago, Kansas City, or Oklahoma City
So there's only the North and Heartland divisions to decide, which Chicago eligible for either conference yet.

NeauXone wrote:Once we reach 32 expansion teams, do you think we can expect a schedule release sometime soon after that?
Yeah, that would be the plan. I think I could get a schedule out within a week of having all 32 teams. The hardest part with the schedule right now, is setting specific games. For example, I can't figure out a way in my scheduler code to set, say, San Antonio at Arizona in week 1. The scheduling generating code just doesn't finish if I try to force a pre-set game. But, the code is able to produce a randomized schedule pretty easily other than that. It grantees no team plays 3 consecutive road games, or 3 consecutive home games, and it will keep track the scheduling rotation from year to year. Once I have all 32 teams, I'll produce a schedule, and that part that might take a while, is individually moving some games around to get some of the matchups I want for the kickoff game in Arizona, and for the Memorial Day classic. If that's easy enough, I'll also try to set matchups for the International games, and Easter Sunday.

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
I haven't gotten any new team requests in a while for expansion franchises.
I originally set a date of December 1 for new owners to jump in and take any remaining teams, but as time goes along, I'm not sure if that will happen.
I'd like to change that timeline a bit I think.
OPTION 1
Everyone who is interested in owning a second franchise, reply to this thread, and I'll add you name to a list.
On Monday October 18th, if there are still expansion franchises available, then I'll take a look at the list, and we can determine ownership. Joint ownership will be allowed, so, 2 or more people can split the franchise fee and own the team together, if we have more interested owners than teams available.
We can all discuss as a league what we think the best course of action will be when we get to October 18th. Things will be more clear when we know the expansion teams remaining, and the number of people interested in a second ownership.
In the 2023 season though, anyone owning multiple teams will have to drop ownership down to a single team, and put their others up for sale. The goal is to have 32 unique team owners every season, but I know that won't always be the case.
OPTION 2
As a league, we can create the two new teams, starting now, give them designs and everything, and, put these teams up for sale.
If by January 1st, these teams don't have an owner, then any of you can choose to own, or joint own these extra teams.
Again, as stated above, in the 2023 season though, anyone owning multiple teams will have to drop ownership down to a single team, and put their others up for sale. The goal is to have 32 unique team owners every season, but I know that won't always be the case.
Let me know what you all think of these two options, and by Monday next week, we can be decided on either option 1 or 2.

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
Sounds like Option 2 is far and away the best here.
Tomorrow, I think about how we best want to go about league collaboration, so that everyone can get an equal voice, instead of the first people in kind of taking over.
It may be more of a drawn out process to get there, but it should be a fair way to do it.
If you've got ideas, just keep them to yourself for now, and tomorrow, I'll let you all know how we're going to go about this, likely in a new thread dedicated to each of the two expansion teams.

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
Okay, I did some thinking, and this is what today's GSL expansion activity is going to be.
Anyone interested in having a say, EMAIL me (you can just use my regular email address, or the GUD email, either is fine), the city in which expansion team 32 will play.
There are 3 cities remaining to choose from:
Kansas City
Minneapolis
Oklahoma City
Vancouver is already selected as a GSL city, so you've got one of these three to pick.
Tomorrow morning, I will announce the city of the three above that's been awarded a team.
With that said, if you're interested in how which city is chosen effects division alignment, here are the three possible division alignments, given that Vancouver will host a franchise.
Divisions with Kansas City
Divisions with Minnesota
Divisions with Oklahoma City
The only city of these that have a note, is that the nearest suitable stadium for the Oklahoma City team would be in Norman, Oklahoma
I'm going to copy this all into a dedicated thread about team 32.

I like option 1, and would like to own another team. Was hoping to do this from the outset, and am not sure why this is going to be off the table now. Whether an expansion franchise or taking over LA I was intending to have second team this year.

This is correct. At the end of designing the final two expansion teams (which you can have a say in), the remaining un-owned teams, can either be owned by a single person, or joint owned. Right now there are 4 un-owned teams available.
There are too many people in the league that want to own a second team, so this option was the most fair way to give everyone a chance at owning a second team, plus have a say in new team designs.

Same rules apply as to new owners taking over a team, so all designs are locked in. The original 6 teams, are a little more difficult to change, only because they are really meant for people who don't care about the designs as much, and I kind of self designated them as the "historic" franchises of the bunch. Not that those team designs can't change, since they have slightly from year to year, but that process goes through me a little more. For example, changing the Brewers is something I'm open to, but I'd probably want the colors to remain the same, and the uniforms to be mostly the same, while other aspects I'm more open to change. I was thinking next year, with some of the un-owned teams, as a league we can discuss design changes for teams being put up for sale.

Re: 2022 GSL Expansion
So if I understand this correctly, everyone is naming the potential final two expansion teams, in case new owners dont claim them, and in case there are too many existing owners that want a second team, thus nobody gets a second team?
However if there is a new owner, they are stuck with that franchise identity?
Also new owners are unable to change the uniform / logos of St Louis or Los Angeles if they take over?

Yes, mostly because it seems like any new owners who wanted to join this year already have, since all the new ownership requests were in the first week. Everyone in the league is also designing these two new expansion teams. It's likely that by October 18th, no new prospective owners will email me, given how things have gone the last two years, plus, you all here are the ones most excited about owning other teams. But, yes, if, in the case that a new owner does want to come on board, they will have 4 teams to choose from, and won't be able to make changes until the 2023 season, which follows the guidelines put in place for purchasing an existing team from earlier this year. With St. Louis and Los Angeles, designs can change (look at LA from 2020 to 2021), they just can't relocate or change the name, and I'm a little more protective over that change process.
