Hit List #4 - 1960 AFL NOBs ***CLOSED***

Forgive me if I've put this out here before, guys.

While responding to a post in a thread tonight, part of my response was explaining how much we already know about 'which combos were worn in each game.' Aside from the 1970s which are going to be really quite tricky, the only other large gap facing us all the way back to 1950 remains the Inaugural Season of the AFL - 1960.

While we know that all AFL teams wore colored jerseys at home and white on the road, one thing escapes us...NOBs. We know that by the end of the 1960 season the majority of AFL teams had NOBs (both of the New York Titans jerseys and the Boston Patriots' home reds being the only exceptions). However, the season did not start that way.

These require no investigation...
Boston (NE) - white jersey had NOB all season; red jersey had NO NOB all season
Los Angeles (SD) - NOB all season
NY Titans (Jets) - no NOB all season

These, however, will...
Buffalo - had NOBs by season's end
Denver - had NOBs by season's end
Dallas (KC) - had NOBs by season's end
Houston - had NOBs by season's end
Oakland - FULL NOB by season's end

What we are looking for, as always, is photographic proof of when the transition was made from No NOBs to having the NOBs in the 1960 AFL season for these 5 teams.

***UPDATE

Buffalo - no progress to announce

Dallas (KC) - Week 6 photo shows no NOBs - means 1-5 were 'no NOBs'.
- Week 12 photo shows NOBs present. NOB jerseys assured for 12-15.
- Bye Week 7. Still unkonwn for Weeks 8-11.

Denver - Week 9 photo shows NOBs. NOBs assured for 9-15.
- Bye Week 5. Still unknown for Weeks 1-4 and 6-8.

Houston - Week 5 game shows NOBs. NOBs assured for rest of season.
- Bye Week 4. Still unknown for Weeks 1-3.

Oakland - no progress to announce

After viewing Part 1 of "AFL: Full Color Football" and cross referencing plays/player numbers with 'Pro Football Boxscores' and combining this with newspaper photos already collected, I now sit with the following...

Boston - Wore NOBs for Game 1 at home (red jerseys)
- No evidence of wearing NOBs on red jerseys after that (No NOBs for Week 12 home vs HOU or for Week 11 home vs DAL)
- No NOBs on white jersey for Week 7 at Denver

Buffalo - No Week 1 NOBs
- NOBs present for Week 7 home vs OAK

Dallas - No NOBs for Week 6 @ HOU
- NOBs present for Week 12 @ NY Titans

Denver - NOBs present for Week 9 home vs HOU

Houston - No NOBs for Week 1
- NOBs present for Week 5 home vs NY Titans

LA Chargers - no photo showing NO NOBs - believed to be present all season

NY Titans - no NOBs worn all season

Oakland - No NOBs for Week 10 home vs BUF
- NOBs present for Week 13 home vs LA Chargers

BOSTON WITH BIG NOBs! BIg and Thin NOBs may be why they were hard to see in photo we already have from later in the year. They wouldn't have removed the names at some point, would they???

I noticed that this thread had 500 visits but not a lot of posts. This led me to believe there is significant interest here so I figured I'd post an update. Without seeing anymore of the games from the previous post, these are the 'semi-conclusive' conclusions as I've found...

Boston Patriots
Based on the unlikely event that they actually removed the NOBs at some point in 1960, it is my belief that players went both with AND without NOBs throughout the season and never completed the team NOBs until 1961.

Buffalo Bills
No NOBs for Week 1 but were present for each week starting with Week 7. NOBs were added for either Week 2,3,4, or 6 (Week 5 was a bye). This is really the only uncertainty remaining.

Dallas Texans
Went No NOB until a game on Week 9.

Denver Broncos
No NOBs ever appeared on the white road jerseys.
NOBs were added for the last 3 home games - Weeks 9, 12, & 13.

Houston Oilers
No NOBs for the 1st 2 weeks.
NOBs added for the rest of the season.

Los Angeles Chargers
NOBs entire season.

New York Titans
No NOBs until 1961.

Oakland Raiders
Identical to Dallas. Added NOBs starting at Week 9.
