Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
While researching for my next blog I came across a few things.
The sleeve stripes on the white jerseys should be just like the Packers 1959 - 71 that were corrected recently. The yellow stripes inside the burgundy should be narrower. I don't have the time right now to post a ton of pics, but it appears to be consistent through about '73.
Then in '74 a second version with equal stripes appears (possibly another durene / mesh variation?)
The Redskins switched to a V neck in '76 (that database shows crew necks through '77.
In 1978 the Redskins wore two different stripe patterns on the sleeves - contiguous and separated (database shows only separated.)
11/15/70
11/20/72
12/22/74
11/21/76
12/10/78
There might be some more refinements required, but this is a pretty good start.
I've also come across a correction for the Cowboys around 1969 - '72 maybe. There are a lot of pictures of them vs Washington available, I'll get to them later on. Back to work for now...

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
Starting in '77 the Redskins V necks had a crossover (same as the Giants from 1980-99).
In '78, the crossover applied to both jerseys sleeve styles, but the crossover point was a little different (take a close look to see).

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
Larry,
I would guess the striping you are talking about on the whites would have actually started in 1969?
So it would go something like:
1969-1977: Cleveland/Green Bay style.
1978: Mix of equal width stripes and separated stripes.
And for the collar stripes:
1969-1975: crew
1976: V
1977-1978: crossover V
And combining the two:
1969-1975: Browns/Packers style sleeve stripes with crew neck.
1976: Browns/Packers style sleeve stripes with V neck.
1977: Browns/Packers style sleeve stripes with crossover V neck.
1978: equal width and separated sleeve stripes with crossover V neck.
Would you agree with this timeline, Larry?

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
Hi Tim,
Yes, I agree.
I didn't find and '69 pictures with the white jerseys, but I think it's safe to assume the stripes were the thinner yellow and thicker burgundy.
Just to clarify - from '74 - '78 there were two white jerseys. The thin yellow/thick burgundy sleeve stripes (probably the durene?) was consistent throughout. The equal width sleeve stripes (mesh?) ran from '74 - '77. In '78 that one was replaced with the separated stripes. I've come across picture from game where players were wearing both versions in the same game.
12/9/74
Larry Brown is wearing the thin yellow/thick burgundy jersey. The lineman in the background #62 is wearing the equal width jersey,

I'll look around and find a few more pictures to illustrate this.

I'm going to need some closeups of the crossovers. I believe BBL said there were 2 types?
Also, BBL, all of the uploaded images that start http://cache, I can't get them to pop up when I click on them.

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
Cool.
Also, when they switched to the V-neck was that switch also for the burgundy jerseys as well?
And can we tell if the solid burgundy collars on those jerseys, if they were V-necks, were they normal Vs or crossovers as well?
Another question...
By the looks of the photos of the crossovers you sent, the 'Giants' style being worn by Joe T was on the separated stripes version.
The 'flat bottom' V-neck being worn by Riggo was on the equal width striped version. Both of these are 1978.
Which versions were on the '77 jerseys - both the 'Green Bay' style striped jersey and the 'equal sized striped jersey?

I presume they went to v necks on the burgundy jerseys at the same time, but I've mostly been focusing on the white jerseys to this point. I'll look into it some more and get back to you.
It will be tough to see if they also had crossovers given that they were solid, the striping on the white ones makes it very easy to spot.

There were no sleeve stripes that year, right?

Don't worry about that one. That was a plain, no-stripe mesh jersey worn for 'hot' games.
Also, I added another question for the '77 crossovers above in an edit after the fact.

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
I went through my Redskins '77s and found this one...
The nearest Redskins with the ball, if you zoom in, A) he has the Packers style stripes going on and B) it is not a flat-bottom V-neck.
This means that the '77 white jerseys with the Packers style stripes were either normal v-necks (like '76) or they were the Giants' style crossover. Difficult to tell.
Also, in this shot, from '77 as well, does it look to you as if the ball carrier is wearing a crew neck still?

1977 - burgundy V-neck, can't really tell if it's a crossover or not.

Back up to 1969...
Just to point out that the plain white jersey was worn only for the game in New Orleans. All other regular season whites had the Packer style jersey.

FYI - I lucked upon a wealth of detailed information here:

Re: Redskins white jerseys 1969 - 78.
Nice find BBL.
Unfortunately, it doesn't address the problem of the '77s having 2 different sets of sleeve stripes in relation to the different collar types.
I'm beginning to think these discrepancies are due to players using jerseys from previous years' issues. Kind of a "I liked last year's jerseys better than this new one," sort of thing.
For 1978 we know the crossover went with the separated stripes and the flat-bottom collar went with the Packers-style stripes.
According to the article, the flat-bottomed collar was a 1978 invention so it shouldn't appear in earlier years.
This means that in 1977 we should only see the 'new' (Giants style) crossovers as well as holdovers of the regular V-neck from 1976 which appeared on both the Packers-style striped AND the equal-sized striped jerseys. The question I have is did these new 'crossover' collars appear on one or both of the 1977 white jersey types?
I'd hate to think we need to show both 1976 stripe pattern models for '77 AND both of these jerseys with the 'new crossover' collar as well.
To further complicate matters I came across these...
This is a TOPPS 1979 card (showing a '78 uniform of the Giants style collar on separated stripes - what we expect)
But then I found this Topps 1978 card (showing a '77 jersey? - with the flat-bottomed crossover that the article says didn't start until 1978 over Packers style sleeve stripes)
I am SO confused about 1977!

I get what you're saying.
Here in the same game in '77 you have two Redskins with the flat bottomed V neck:

But Theisman is still wearing his '76 holdover standard V neck:

One nice thing though, with everyone wearing all of these different models, often in the same game as has been pointed out in several photos, we won't need to do a game-by-game run through for the individual game uniform match-ups when we get to the 70s for these guys. It seems like they are going the way of the early '72 Dolphins and just wearing whatever the heck they feel like for each game.
I'd just like to nail down which stripe patterns were worn with which collars in '77 so we can put a bow on this and be done.
